Differential Service and Repair - Differential PictureWhat is it… and what does it do?

First off, there are front-wheel-drive differentials, rear-wheel-drive differentials and all-wheel-drive differentials.

What it is…  You’ve noticed that bulge underneath the truck in front of you, in the middle of the axle, right? – that’s the differential.

What it does… Think about taking a left or right-hand turn at an intersection. When you turn, the outside wheels have a longer distance to travel than the inside wheels. That means that the outside wheels have to turn a bit faster than the inside. The differential allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds in turns, without the wheel binding up or hopping.

It is recommended to replace your differential fluid at least once every 25,000-30,000 miles (about every 2 years for most drivers), as the fluids do slowly break down over time. This is due to the extreme heat and stress that your gearbox operates under. The differential fluid is the lubricant and ultimately the protection for your gears, bearings and shafts.

Our Differential Service helps prevent the premature wearing of, as well as protection against failure of your bearings and gears.

We inspect your fill and drain plugs, as well as flush and vacuum out the bad oil in your gearbox. Then we refill the differential with fresh, new high quality gear oil, and re-install the plugs.

Differential Service and Replacement

Now, of course differentials eventually wear out and need to be replaced, like any other part of your car. You might notice a strange noise from your axle area as one of the first warning signs.

When the differential shows signs of failing, it’s important to repair it as soon as you can. If you leave it too long, and it freezes up when you’re driving, you could lose control of your vehicle. As well, other parts of your vehicle like the axle, drive shaft and transmission could be damaged from driving on a bad and/or failing differential.
